Paul Joyce

Superintendent Operational Support Services North Wales Police

Associate Consultant & Assessor, Train the Trainer

I have recently retired from the police service my last post being in charge of the Contact Centre that handles all communications for the force. My service in the police and previous to that the military has let me experience first hand the importance of having the correct culture in the professional setting.

I volunteered to be part of a small team with Rukhsana and Karl that set up and delivered innovative equality, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) training across North Wales Police. The training changed hearts and minds and we collectively helped staff to develop in this area.

EDI is at my heart, as a senior police leader, recognising the under representation in my armed policing unit I created an environment where this could be changed, paving the way for the unit to have the highest proportion of female officers in the UK. My work was recognised by the British Association of Women in Policing.

I really enjoy helping people to be the best that they can be. I have successfully supported many people with their career progression over the course of my service.

When not at work you are most likely to find my wife and I on a campsite, in our motorhome, with our dog Louie who I talk about far too much!

Karl Rathbone QPM

Associate Consultant, Assessor & Train the Trainer

Karl Rathbone is a lecturer with Grwp Llandrillo Menai and associate lecturer with Bangor University and the University of Central Lancashire where he teaches on the Policing BSc. courses and the new Policing pre-join degree.

A former police officer and senior manager with North Wales Police, he was among other things the key author of an armed policing project amalgamating the armed policing functions of two North West police forces. This together with the management of the North Wales Police Royal Residence Protection Team, a programme providing security and an armed protection function to TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge during HRH The Duke of Cambridge’s deployment with RAF Valley Search and Rescue Squadron, saw him awarded the Queens Police Medal for distinguished service in the 2015 Queen’s Birthday Honours.

A senior author and trainer for the North Wales Police Diversity and Leadership Programme; author and trainer for the North Wales Police Critical Incident Debriefing Team programme (Trauma management), and a long-standing peer counsellor, Karl has bolstered his teaching portfolio with a Professional Certificate in Education (PCE) and now teaches Higher and Further education in Policing, Diversity and Equality and Policing Communities and Partnerships.

Driven by a desire to improve understanding of fairness, equality and inclusivity, Karl shares his experiences and intellect with a penchant for standing in front of large groups of people, most of whom are unknown to him, in the hope of brightening their day with fact, theory and often stories designed to develop their knowledge, understanding, skills, attitudes and behaviours relating to his specialist subject.

Outside the professional role and supported by his attached photograph is an understanding that he is unlikely to ever grace a fashion catwalk, model for a designer hair emporium or inhabit a suit from a petite range. This aside, he is a skilled, enthusiastic and gifted tutor, mentor and practitioner of learning specialising in equality.
